🇫🇮 10 Things That Surprised Me About Finland

I didn’t know what to expect when we visited Finland… but it ended up being one of the most interesting (and surprisingly delightful) places we’ve traveled.
It’s one of those destinations that doesn’t always make the “top of the list” — but maybe it should.
Here are a few things that genuinely surprised me while we were there:
1. It Might Be the Safest Place I’ve Ever Been
One of the first things we noticed was how safe everything felt.
Kids as young as 5–6 take public transportation to school on their own. That alone tells you a lot about the culture and level of trust.
2. The People Are Genuinely Kind
Not in a forced, overly friendly way — just genuinely kind, calm, and helpful.
Everywhere we went — restaurants, shops, walking around — people were welcoming and easygoing. You can feel why Finland consistently ranks as one of the happiest countries in the world.
3. Public Transportation Is So Easy
If you’ve ever felt intimidated by public transit in another country… Finland is a great place to get over that fear. It’s clean, efficient, and very easy to navigate. Most people either walk or take public transportation everywhere.
4. It’s a Very Calm, Peaceful Place
There’s a quietness to Finland that’s hard to describe until you experience it.
Nothing feels rushed. People aren’t loud or chaotic. It just feels… peaceful.
5. The Food Is Simple (and Meat/Fish Heavy)
One thing we noticed pretty quickly — there aren’t a ton of vegetables on menus.
Meals tend to focus on meat and fish, with simpler sides. But what they do, they do well.
6. Inclusiveness Is Just… Normal
This was something I really appreciated.
There are no assumptions about gender roles, and menus often include mocktails just as normally as cocktails. It’s just part of the culture — not something that feels forced or performative.
7. Saunas Are a Way of Life
Saunas aren’t a “luxury” here — they’re part of everyday life.
Homes, hotels, gyms… they’re everywhere. It’s just what people do to relax and unwind.
8. Moomins Are Everywhere
If you’re not familiar with Moomins, you will be after visiting Finland.
They’re beloved characters that represent adventure, curiosity, and living in harmony with nature — and they’re a big part of Finnish culture.
9. No One Takes Leftovers Home
This one surprised me.
“Doggy bags” aren’t really a thing in Finland. People typically eat what they’re served.
It actually stems from history — during times when food was scarce, wasting food simply wasn’t an option.
10. And Yes… There Are Bidets Everywhere 😄
We have to end on this one.
Every bathroom — even public restrooms — has a handheld bidet.
It definitely takes a minute to get used to… but once you notice it, you realize it’s just completely normal there.
Final Thoughts
Finland may not always be the first place people think of when planning a European trip…
…but it’s clean, safe, peaceful, and full of subtle surprises that make it incredibly memorable.
It’s the kind of place that sneaks up on you — and ends up being a favorite.
